OMEGA X’s first sub-unit group OX:N make their official debut in Japan with their first Japanese single album SWAY, as they carve out a distinct sonic identity for themselves.
Having debuted in June 2025 and quickly cementing their diverse musicality, OX:N – consisting of members Jaehan, Xen, Jehyun, and Yechan – weave through feelings of constraint, loneliness, and yearning on their latest project. From the unrestrained dance-pop stylings of "SWIRKY," to pop-rock anthem "SOMEBODY," exploring a relatable desire to be happy in love, SWAY is emotive and catchy all at once within just two impactful tracks, as it continues to shape OX:N's musical journey with each lush note.
With anthemic soundscapes and messages that strike a chord with anyone who tunes, OX:N continue to be forces to be reckoned with. Chatting to Earmilk, the band delve into the single album, shaping a distinct musical signature as a sub-unit and memorable moments in their career so far.
- What is the message/inspiration behind SWAY?
JAEHAN: The idea came from our desire to break free from a routine that feels the same every day. While YECHAN and I were walking through the streets of Osaka, we talked a lot about what ‘freedom’ means to us, and that conversation naturally shaped the direction of the album.
YECHAN: “SWIRKY” was born while we were wandering around Osaka without any plan. For this album, we wanted to capture human emotions and desires as naturally and honestly as possible.
- How would you say you've carved out a distinct sound for the subunit and how has it evolved with each release?
JAEHAN: Whenever we prepare for a new album, we always aim to try something new. We spend a lot of time thinking and shaping each release, so we’re truly grateful that people receive our music so warmly every time!
YECHAN: We’re still in the process of discovering and refining our direction, but with every new song, it feels like we’re able to place each member’s voice in different parts more accurately and meaningfully.
- Does the creative process vary for OX:N as opposed to your musical process in Omega X?
JAEHAN: I don’t think the process is drastically different. When I work on music, I think about each member individually, so aside from having fewer members this time, the overall process hasn’t really changed for me.
XEN: When we worked on OMEGA X albums, there were moments where I had to set aside parts of my personal color for the sake of the full group. But while working on OX:N, I really tried to show more of myself without hesitation. I think that’s the biggest difference between producing for OMEGA X and for OX:N.
JEHYUN: Since there are fewer of us now, the amount of time needed to finish things has definitely decreased. I’d say that’s the biggest difference.
YECHAN: I think the parts within songs are a little more flexible now. It feels like we can switch and adjust more freely.
- On the flip side how was your creative process as a subunit influenced or improved your creativity in Omega X?
JAEHAN: OX:N allows us to explore a completely different musical direction from OMEGA X, so we’ve been creating songs across many genres. Working on such a wide range of styles has been inspiring and has influenced us in positive ways.
XEN: As I mentioned earlier, looking inward really helps my creativity. Thinking about the sound and stage direction I want to pursue naturally leads to ideas, and I try to bring those thoughts to life as honestly as possible.
JEHYUN: Since OX:N songs feel like they fall under styles OMEGA X hasn’t done before, the recording and performance process has taught me a lot.
YECHAN: I think we’re able to create more freely now, breaking away from our previous concepts and trying out various ideas.
- What's your personal favourite track from the single album and why?
JAEHAN: My favorite is “SWIRKY.” I wrote it myself, and every time I listen to it, it gives me this rush of excitement that makes me want to keep replaying it.
XEN: I’d choose “SOMEBODY.” I wrote the track, and the lyrics reflect some of the pain and stories we’ve been through, so I naturally feel more attached to it.
JEHYUN: Both songs have different charms, so it’s hard to pick just one. What they have in common is that they both feel really fun and energetic to me, which is why I love them.
YECHAN: My pick is “SOMEBODY.” Singing it with fans while enjoying the rhythm together feels incredibly special and meaningful.
- As a subunit whats been the most memorable moment of your career? Whats on your bucket list?
JAEHAN: The moment that stands out the most for me is our unit debut showcase. Nothing compares to that first rush of nerves and excitement, and I’m proud that we were able to begin this unit on such a strong start. And I really want to return to OMEGA X activities soon. Being on stage with all eleven members is when I’m truly happiest.
XEN: My wish is that we won’t be forgotten until all the OMEGA X members come together again.
JEHYUN: The most memorable moment was when this unit was first formed, and what I want to achieve going forward is returning as a full OMEGA X group.
YECHAN: I think this Japan schedule will remain unforgettable for me. Spending a long time overseas has given me space to think about things I couldn’t while in Korea. I want to keep waiting for the full group of OMEGA X, and continue making music freely.
- Are there any genres or concepts you're keen to experiment with in the future?
JAEHAN: I’m open to any concept we haven’t tried before. I always want to take on new challenges and show everyone something different. We haven’t finalized the concept or genre for our next album yet, but I believe we’ll try another new direction again.
XEN: I want to explore electronic music and techno sound.
JEHYUN: No matter the genre, I would like to take on something completely new that we haven’t shown yet.
YECHAN: I want to try hyper-pop. I don’t think we’ve ever experimented with that kind of futuristic sound before.
- If you could describe OX:N's sound in three words what would they be and why?
JAEHAN: Happiness, freedom, and love. I think if you have happiness, love, and freedom, you can spend each day feeling good. I hope listeners can feel that through OX:N’s music.
XEN: SWAY, + (plus), and “me.”
JEHYUN: Challenge, familiarity, and uniqueness. We’re always challenging ourselves, and even within what feels familiar, OX:N has its own distinct color.
YECHAN: Freedom, naturalness, and youth.
