Takes a Village Music started as a community music studio in Toronto’s Chinatown and has since evolved into a vibrant record label, with a focus—though not exclusively—on supporting and uplifting Asian artists.
“Take It Slow” is one of the first songs to emerge from Potluck Sessions—a weekly gathering in Toronto’s Chinatown where artists cook, collaborate, and create new music in real time. The song sets the tone for what Potluck Sessions is becoming: music rooted in community, care, and shared stories. It’s a mission that feels grounded, inviting, and genuinely meaningful.
“Take It Slow” carries an alternative hip-hop vibe anchored by an in-the-pocket groove that makes the track feel alive.
The rap flow is cool, calm, and collected, blending seamlessly with vocals that are dreamy, airy, and soulful. It’s the kind of song that feels like a warm hug you didn’t realize you needed from a family member.

The top-line melody of the chorus introduces a slightly dissonant, intriguing element, creating a slight contrast that complements the other sonic layers, fitting together like perfectly matched puzzle pieces.
To mark the release of "Take It Slow," Potluck Sessions teamed up with local Chef Malaya, who prepared a dish that carries the same spirit: buta no kakuni don, a slow-braised pork bowl.
When Malaya first made it for the team this past winter, he shared that it was his wife’s favorite dish when she was sick—something she turned to for comfort and healing.
The Japanese word kakuni contains the character ni, meaning “slow”—a nod both to the braising process and the quiet, restorative patience it requires. It’s a perfect metaphor for a song that celebrates the art of taking things slow.
