Paige Kennedy has a rare knack for bottling awkwardness, wit, and chaotic charm into three-minute pop bursts, and their new single “Male Friend” is the sharpest example yet. Following last year’s brilliantly eccentric Babylotion EP, this track pushes Kennedy’s brand of alt-pop into more exhilarating territory.
Built on jittery beats and a kaleidoscope of synth textures, “Male Friend” has the unrelenting pulse of a Friday-night anthem but never slips into cliché. Instead, Kennedy leans into a sideways humour that feels as indebted to basement indie sleaze as it does to the cartoonish maximalism of Y2K club hits. There’s a restless, conversational quality to their delivery that’s half confession and half comedy routine, and it keeps you hooked as the story unfolds.
Lyrically, it’s a razor-sharp vignette of queer flirting, rejection, and the paranoia of being upstaged by the archetypal “hot male friend.” Kennedy’s gift is in turning personal insecurities into playful, communal moments of recognition, often mocking tropes while exposing the sting behind them. It’s arch, self-deprecating, and defiantly fun.
The accompanying video dials the eccentricity even higher, Paige and their band mates parodying crime dramas with a surreal flair that matches the song’s frenetic energy. It’s equal parts Broadchurch meets Twin Peaks, filtered through a glittery house party lens.
Kennedy’s growing cult of fans aren’t just here for the jokes there’s a catharsis in sharing too. With their largest set of UK headlines dates planned for February they would be a great place to join the riot.
