Singer-songwriter Hallie Marie has released her new song, “Blue In Her Head.”
A Buddhist-inspired look on dealing with depression, Hallie Marie uses “Blue In Her Head” to take an introspective look at learning to see the beauty of life after a long period of time being unable to see it.
Throughout the track, Hallie Marie refers to others as “hungry ghosts,” the Buddhist idea of other beings being driven by intense emotional needs in an uncontrollable, animalistic way. The song itself starts off almost muted and quiet, Hallie Marie’s vocals coming through strong but with a whispered edge.
As the song continues, more instruments come in, making the sound bigger and more lush, as the vocals grow in strength and passion. As Hallie Marie sings “so what’s a girl supposed to do with all this blue in her head?,” it really feels as if she’s looking for answers – and as the song continues, the mood shifts as if she’s closer to finding the ones she’s looking for. The lyric changes “what else is there to do with all this blue in our heads?”, as if Hallie Marie has realised she’s not alone in her feelings, and taking comfort in the shared human experience.
A mix of genres and influences from Phoebe Bridgers to Sufjan Stevens, “Blue In Her Head” is a sad, hopeful, powerful song from an artist who knows how to bring brevity to difficult concepts.
