Titanic cut a quirky figure with second album "Hagen"

Titanic (Héctor Tosta aka I. la Católica and Mabe Fratti) have released their long-awaited second album Hagen.

Their first full-length LP since 2023’s Vidrio, Hagen is full of quirky song titles like “You swallowed the gum,” “The decapitated hen,” “A tear from the sun,” and “Leak,” all coming together to make a thoroughly modern, lush, and distinctive pop record.

Like their previous album, Hagen was partly recorded at Fratti and Tosta’s house, Tinho Studios in Mexico City, as well as at Golden Girl Studios and Circular Ruin Studios in New York City. Mixed by Santiago Parra at Pedro y el Lobo Studios, Hagen was mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios. Featured artists include Nate Salon on drums, synths and programming, Daniel Lopatin on synths on the track “Pájaro de fuego”, and Eli Keszler on drums to round out the sound.

Made up of ten tracks, each of Hagen’s song titles is presented in Spanish – “Lágrima del sol” (A tear from the sun), “Gotera” (Leak), “Escarbo dimensiones” (Digging dimensions), “Te tregaste el chicle” (You swallowed the gum), “Libra”, “La dueña” (The owner), “Gallina degollada” (The Decapitated Hen), “Pájaro de fuego” (Firebird), “La trampa sale” (The trap is exposed), and “Alzando el trofeo” (Lifting the trophy).

A folk-accented, eclectic and clashing LP, Hagen echoes throughout with varied and interesting instrumentation that accents Fratti’s whisper-thin yet soulful vocals throughout. This is particularly true on tracks like “Escarbo dimensiones,” “Libra,” “La dueña,” and “Pájaro de fuego.” The LP is dark but also light-hearted, a true contradiction.

TItanic are one of the most sonically interesting duos who’ve released music so far this year, and they deserve to make their way into cult status.
