CMG’s ‘Heart of Gold Volume 1’ is a raw, soulful ode to Neil Young’s legacy

Neil Young’s music has always lived in that rare space between honest confessional and cultural commentary, so it’s only fitting that Heart of Gold Volume 1, the new CMG-produced compilation of covers, hits that same sweet spot between personal and powerful. Spearheaded by industry veterans Dave Resnik and Niko Bolas, the record brings together an eclectic roster of artists including, Brandi Carlile, Eddie Vedder, Fiona Apple, Mumford & Sons, The Doobie Brothers, to name a few, to reimagine Neil’s songs through their own voices.

The album features not only well-known names but also rising artists like Chris Pierce, whose powerful cover of “Southern Man” showcases his warm, velvet vocal tone. It was Pierce’s session with CMG that ended up sparking the idea for the entire compilation.

Recorded mostly in one or two takes at CMG’s Surf Shack studio in LA, these covers feel refreshingly real and unfiltered. Every artist handpicked their track, and that personal connection bleeds into every note. It’s a rare chance for artists to put their own spin on beloved Neil Young classics, while also supporting a cause that truly matters.

The album has evolved into a full-scale benefit for The Bridge School, a charity which supports children with severe speech and physical impairments. The response from the artist community has been nothing short of incredible. So many musicians have stepped forward, eager to lend their voices to the cause, that Volumes 2 and 3 are already in the works. It’s a testament not only to Neil Young’s enduring influence but also to the power of music to unite people around something bigger than themselves.
