Cut Copy returns after 5 years with “Solid," a luminous new chapter from the electronic pioneers

After a five-year hiatus from releasing original material, Cut Copy makes a compelling return with “Solid," an emotionally rich, sonically transportive new single released via Cutters Records / The Orchard. The release signals the beginning of a fresh creative phase for the acclaimed Melbourne-born band, whose two-decade legacy of fusing euphoric dancefloor rhythms with poignant lyricism remains as vital as ever.

“Solid” arrives in the wake of 2020’s Freeze, Melt, an album noted for its ambient restraint and introspective mood. In contrast, the new single offers a sense of gentle propulsion—balancing quiet optimism with a forward-moving pulse. Soft synths, atmospheric layering, and a quietly triumphant chorus (“We’ll be solid”) underscore the track’s meditative yet uplifting tone. Initially conceived as an instrumental, the track organically evolved into a fully formed song during a period of personal transition for frontman Dan Whitford.

“I wrote the song as a reminder to myself that things will be okay,” says Whitford. “Even when life feels uncertain, there’s something comforting in holding on to that belief. I hope the song can be a source of encouragement for others, too.”

The release is accompanied by a limited-edition 12" vinyl featuring an exclusive B-side, “A Decade Long Sunset,” available for pre-order now through the band’s website.

From the breakthrough success of In Ghost Colours, hailed by Pitchfork as one of the best albums of the 2000s, to the textural innovation of Zonoscope and the polished sheen of Haiku From Zero, Cut Copy has continuously evolved their sound while maintaining a deep-rooted emotional resonance. Their accolades span GRAMMY nominations, ARIA wins, and major festival appearances at Coachella, Primavera, Lollapalooza, and more. Their music has also become a fixture in popular culture, featured in campaigns and soundtracks from FIFA 18 to Levi’s®.

Now composed of Whitford, Tim Hoey (guitar), Mitchell Scott (drums), and Ben Browning (bass), Cut Copy returns not to revisit the past, but to build upon it. “Solid” feels like both a renewal and a natural continuation of their sound; familiar yet evolved, nostalgic yet fresh.

As the band quietly teases more new material on the horizon for 2025, “Solid” serves as both a reintroduction and a promise: that the enduring magic of Cut Copy is not just intact, but ready to move us once again.
