ROZET talks new single “Eat,” their upcoming EP, and overcoming doubts through music, therapy, and ballroom culture [Interview]

Miami-born, LA-based producer, singer, and rapper ROZET is stepping into the spotlight with the release of their new single “Eat,” a powerful, genre-blending track that’s part Miami Bass, part Jersey Club, and all attitude. The song is the third single from their forthcoming HEAD EP, an immersive body of work that combines their unique musical style with deeply personal reflections on trauma recovery, therapy, and self-discovery.

We caught up with ROZET to discuss how their experiences in the ballroom scene, their background in psychology, and their journey through mental health have shaped their music. Through their latest releases, ROZET is not just presenting new tracks—they’re crafting a vision of empowerment, introspection, and resilience, inviting listeners to embrace their full selves with unapologetic confidence.

As ROZET sits in their hometown of Miami, the mood feels introspective yet energized as they describe their morning routine: a balanced blend of focus and ritual. "My vibe is a green juice in the morning, a cortadito 10 minutes later, followed by meditation, prayer, and a strong work session." For ROZET, it’s all about setting the right tone for the day—a steady rhythm of clarity and intention.

This sense of grounding carries over into their latest single, “Eat,” a track that fuses aggressive beats with a fierce, confident message. Describing the song as a celebration of personal empowerment, ROZET explains that “Eat” is about winning over adversity. “To overcome doubts I may have about myself, I try to focus on regulating my emotions first before judging myself and my circumstances.” They add, “ As the challenges arise, I try to turn up my visionary voice 5 decibels louder.”

The concept of overcoming doubt runs deeply through both the music and ROZET’s life philosophy, shaped in part by their background in the ballroom and vogue scene. "I’ve had a strong connection to my drag king persona since I was 16," ROZET shares. "I channeled it at dance battles and performed at ballroom events to earn extra cash, but as I matured I realized how crucial the community was for my survival and the ability to express freely and be comforted within any art medium." It was through the dance battles and the underground art scene that ROZET found their voice—and their confidence. "The dance community is really what got my name out there locally when I was a teenager, which instilled a lot of confidence in my art today," they add.

Beyond their experiences in the ballroom scene, ROZET's studies in psychology have also shaped their approach to music and songwriting. "In my opinion, psychology is like a map. I use it to navigate certain situations I may feel I’m viewing too subjectively and this impacts my songwriting," they explain. They’re particularly fascinated by the inner dynamics of the mind. "It influences my persona within songs, like the relationship and dialogue between my superego, ego, and ID."

As they move toward the release of their HEAD EP, ROZET continues to push the boundaries of sound, blending genres and textures into a unique sonic experience. When asked to define their genre, they offer an unconventional metaphor: "I would describe my sound as a third eye tap with a chiropractic adjustment."

ROZET’s creative journey has also led them to form an important partnership with TOKiMONSTA, whose label Young Art Records will release their HEAD EP. "TOKi is a beam of light," they say of the electronic music legend. "She truly cares about the artists she embraces and is extremely knowledgeable in her craft and vision for the future of music and technology. I’ve been a fan of hers for years so it was surreal to meet her, but then it instantly felt like family." After navigating some difficult label situations in the past, ROZET describes their relationship with TOKiMONSTA and Young Art as a "healing transition." They feel supported and celebrated, especially by a team that shares a commitment to empowering diverse voices. "Most of her label consists of Black and LGBTQ artists, and that sounds like a home for me." they share.

The HEAD EP is one of a three-part series that reflects ROZET’s journey through trauma recovery and therapy. "It’s interesting how painful positive transformation is," they note, furthering that it’s a project that invites listeners into a space of vulnerability and growth, encapsulating the raw energy of healing and self-expression. "It doesn’t always give sound bowls and ocean waves, but the EP is immersive so maybe you’ll hear those underneath the cognitive dissonance, synth wave pads, and Afro-percussive Miami bass."

The visuals accompanying ROZET’s music also play a crucial role in their artistic vision. "I usually self-direct a lot of my visuals so I spend a lot of time ideating," they say. "My approach to visuals begins with movement and becoming curious about how bizarre we can all be in each scene. Sometimes I’ll put the song on loud as hell in my jeep and then park and choreograph outside in the window reflection. I love scouting locations and going somewhere new for inspiration- like hiking to a cave or biking through the wilderness for the right spot. Creating visuals is one of my favorite components of being an artist."

Looking ahead, ROZET is brimming with excitement for 2025. "I am giving 2025 my all," they say confidently. "You can expect the 'HEAD' EP release, tour, and a lot of engaging visuals."
