Los Angeles-based indie artist Mia Loucks returns with her latest work, Light It Can Blind You, a three-track EP released on October 25, 2024. The tracks—“Light It Can Blind You,” “Alive,” and “Ricochet,” reflect an intensely personal narrative shaped by Loucks’s recent health struggles over the summer, leading to an unexpected evolution in her musical expression.

Renowned for her raw, lo-fi aesthetic, Loucks recorded the EP entirely in her bedroom, imbuing the music with an intrinsic intimacy. This recording environment magnifies the emotional weight of her vulnerability-laden lyrics, which resonate with the influences of iconic artists such as Elliot Smith, Leonard Cohen, and PJ Harvey. Loucks successfully juxtaposes haunting melodies with lyrics that oscillate between anguish and solace.

The standout track, “Alive,” features a subtle yet defiant sonic architecture characterized by layered, subdued vocals intertwined with uplifting motifs. In contrast, “Ricochet” exhibits a more aggressive edge, navigating dynamic shifts between soft sonorities and sharp clarity, encapsulating the tension between despair and resilience. Each composition invites listeners into Loucks’s introspective realm, encouraging them to engage with the complexities of solitude and emotional surrender.

At a concise duration of just under eight minutes, Light It Can Blind You delivers a formidable emotional impact despite its brevity. Loucks’s unwavering commitment to authenticity and transparency elevates this EP, rendering it essential listening for aficionados of introspective indie music. In a contemporary music landscape frequently dominated by polished production, this bedroom-recorded release serves as a poignant reminder of the raw beauty inherent in embracing life’s imperfections.
