Stephanie Poetri talks inspiration behind "Astrologically Illogical," her current sound and more

Indonesian-born and raised artist Stephanie Poetri delves into moving forward with a relationship that she finds to be successful and loving, despite the two parties’ astrological signs being incompatible on “Astrologically Illogical.”

Tapping into her ability to merge authentic song writing sensibilities with a stunning vocal quality, Poetri moves from the soft, ethereal musicality she has previously cultivated into a bigger and more powerful mix of indie pop and rock on her latest offering.

In conversation with Earmilk, she delves into the inspiration behind “Astrologically Illogical,” her sonic evolution, touring with Lyn Lapid, the most rewarding part of the music-making process and much more.

Your new single “Astrologically Illogical”  is a fun critique on our tendency to check astrological compatibility. Where did the inspiration for this come from?

I was just randomly checking me and my boyfriend’s compatibility and it showed that we were very incompatible. I thought it was very funny and so I just decided to write about it at a session one day!

How would you describe your current sound and where do you see your artistry going from here?

Previously, my songs were all more on the acoustic-chill vibe. Now, I’m taking more inspiration from the indie bands I grew up listening to. So I’d say the sound now is more upbeat, grungy and mature!

What’s the most rewarding part of the music making process for you and what’s the most challenging part of it?

When I’m at a show and people are singing along, or when someone tells me they listened to it a lot during a moment in their lives. I think it's so special that my song gets to accompany them throughout their day.

Who inspires your artistry both professionally and on a personal level?

I’ve been very inspired by Lizzy McAlpine’s songwriting, and Zeph’s production! In terms of personal, being on tour with Lyn Lapid has shown me how amazing of an artist she is and I’m very inspired by her!

You’re on tour with Lyn Lapid as well. Besides getting to perform and meet your fans, what’s your favourite part of touring?

I love the random activities we do when we have extra time before a show. We played golf a couple times.

What’s been your career highlight so far and what’s on your bucket list?

This tour has been amazing! And also getting to collaborate with my favorite artists too of course like Jackson Wang, Elephante, Gnash and JVKE.

Finally, since this track is based on astrology, what song of yours would you pick as a theme song for Taurus folks?

Selfish is such a Taurus-coded song!
