I couldn’t be more excited for the release of alternative duo Boyish’s new single, “Congratulations.” Ever since EARMILK covered their last single, “Smithereens”, I have been obsessed with them. Their soft, moody sound gives off a lush and angsty vibe.
I bet we’ve all had feelings, whether we wanted them or not, for a friend. It’s this weird mix of beautiful and painful, and Boyish hits that right on the nose with this track. The track definitely shimmers with '90s dream-pop/rock elements. The drums and high-hats hit heavy, with Claire Altendahl’s fuzzy guitar in perfect sync. Especially with the smooth, reverbed textures and India Shore’s light vocals, you would’ve thought this was a song by The Cranberries.
In general, the song is doused with nostalgia and memories. The duo said of the track “It’s the moment when you cross the line between friends and something more and the fear that once you cross that line there’s no going back. It’s written from the present day after things have fallen apart but reflects back to the moment when you become more than just friends.”
They’ve also announced their upcoming EP, My Friend Mica, set to release on May 6th. With just the couple of tracks they’ve put out so far, one can tell this new project is going to be great. Keep your eye on this duo.
