Atlanta cosmonaut-turned-emcee Rome Fortune has returned with a simmering new follow up to this year's FREEk LP. The descendant of Nat and Cannonball Adderley, Fortune has been mixing eclectic influences into projects since his 2011, The Air Mattress EP. The increasingly ambitious projects that followed spread mostly via word of mouth, underground promotion and paired Fortune with Toro Y Moi in a collaborative EP as well as features from Young Thug and 03 Greedo on Beautiful Pimp 3. New single, "Lovezone" announces a new, upcoming album and continues on his trajectory with a truly kaleidoscopic interpretation of nineties alternative rock, east coast boom bap rap, and some modern melodic hooks.
"Lovezone" again takes Rome's catalogue in a new direction with this interesting, above the shoulders type of grunge -adjacent slow burner. Kody Nielson joins on the production end to craft a sort of 808s and Heartbreak era Kanye, meets Nine Inch Nails, meets Wu-Tang Clan vibe. Distorted guitar chords fray at the ends, ultimately clashing together passively like two opposing waves. They form a percussive element in this collision, matching seamlessly into a nostalgic, east coast instrumental. The track takes a final left turn for the chorus as Fortune croons a glitchy, spectral melody.
This track feels so specific and unique that it is hard to say whether it will serve as a stylistic precedent for his currently un-named upcoming project, but it sure would be interesting if that was the case. Keep up with Rome Fortune below for new updates on an album title, tracklist, and release dates as they are made available.
