Even with the massive number of artists and musical projects out there in the world, none sound quite like Chassol. While the French composer and producer has made a name for himself by working with the likes of Frank Ocean and Solange, among others, his solo work is truly extraordinary. Since 2011, he has been developing his own experimental approach to composition he calls “ultrascore,” where he integrates vocal and ambient sounds from video footage with music. He has an ambitious new double album Ludi on the horizon through Bertrand Burgalat’s Tricatel label that will also consist of a feature film and live show. With the project’s overarching theme of "play," the second preview of the LP has arrived with music and video for “Savana, Céline, Aya, Pt. 1 & 2.”
The song is centered on three girls playing a clapping game in a sunny schoolyard. With the video featuring handheld shots of the girls as they play, Chassol’s music slowly enters the mix and eventually syncs with their voices as they repeat their names in the game. The girls’ words are given an extra boost from a choir of ALA.NI, Carine Chassol, and Mathieu Edouard, who also plays drums on the track. Chassol’s unique composition and production aesthetic are on full display with “Savana, Céline, Aya, Pt. 1 & 2,” providing a fascinating experience even if someone was only listening to the audio. With the added visual component to the single, it’s clear that Chassol is a trailblazer in mixed media and that Ludi will be one to remember.
Ludi will be released on March 6, 2020. “Savana, Céline, Aya, Pt. 1 & 2” is available to stream or download here. Chassol will be performing Ludi on March 5 at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris. Tickets can be found here.
