Canadian songstress Alexandria Maillot is the menacing queen of pop on her sophomore album Benevolence.
Hailing from Vancouver Island, the sweet eyed singer-songwriter has always had the knack for melody. Her debut 2016 album Time hits every upbeat of acoustic pop. However, 2019 has driven Maillot in a stronger, hard-hearted direction. In that, her second LP Be
nevolence makes no pretense to politeness. Instead, the artist tells it as it is.
In particular, "Someone to Keep You Warm" highlights the LP's impetus. The track stutters boldly, grinding its way to a grimy bass dropping finale. Maillot says, “It’s a song about watching a former partner struggle to find companionship and getting enjoyment out of it.” Maillot's voice shines with tongue-in-cheek cynicism and gloriously dirty synths.
In the same vein, other tracks on the album follow a darker path. Songs like "Make It Out" reflects on the solo artist's experience with depression. Moreover, "I Never Liked Your Friends" delivers a paradox. The track combines a cute flurry of strings with Maillot's scathing lyrics: "I just can't help / But blame you". Above all, Benevolence sees an uncompromising side to Maillot's songwriting, as an artist in control of her sweet-pop domain.
