Big Turks are an artistic collective made up of emcees Rome Streetz, Jamal Gasol, and Lord Juco, with Ro Data on the beats, Jordan Commandeur executive producing, and Jonny Botsch handling art and design. Their debut self-titled 10 track project, which is based on a '70s Turkish martial arts film entitled The Sword And The Claw (aka Lionman aka Kilic Aslan), the group makes several references to Turkish history and culture over exotic beats.
To reinforce the theme, all the beats on the album use samples from Turkish folk music and cinema. Starting with an anthemic intro introducing the main acts, the project starts with the solemn "Son Of Solomon" where we get a grim perspective of where these emcees come from. Tracks like "The Island of Princes (…Off the Coast of Istanbul)" and "Seven" explore a wide variety of themes from loyalty, survival and then some. As expected Rome Streetz and Lord Juco's lyrics are as sharp as ever over the dirty off-kilter soundscapes laid before them. Think Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) but with a Middle Eastern spin.
