Montreal genre-fluid artist Hua Li shares the sublime visual for her song "Greenlight". The song explores conflicted emotions towards a father figure who roams in and out of his daughter's life. Based on her own personal experiences, Hua Li takes the listener on a trippy sojourn that is both intimate and heartwarming. Over the trip-hop styled production, Hua Li approaches the delicate topic with different moods ranging from love, repulsion and a need for validation.
The visual is quite interesting as director Paz Ramirez adds her own unique cinematic touch to the song. There are a handful of subtle elements from the choice of mixing b&w alongside a bright color aesthetic for the different characters. From the jump, we are introduced to the performance artist Winnie Ho who plays the central maternal-type figure in the story. Beguiled by chaos in her home, she attempts to bring sanity back to the forefront the only way she knows how. On the other hand, Hua Li plays some sort of omniscient character who watches the madness in the home from a different viewpoint and ultimately acts as the silent comforter to Winnie's character.
"Greenlight" blends ethereal melodies and fiery raps to convey her innermost thoughts in a breathtaking performance. The track is taken from Hua Li's upcoming debut project DYNASTY which is scheduled for release on the 20th of September.
