daste evokes a 'Palette' of warm, coastal hues in debut EP [Premiere]

There's something about a hazy lo-fi vibe that transports you immediately to the beach, joint in hand, horizon obscured by brilliant sun rays. This energy emanates from the Australian trio daste. Premiering today with EARMILK, the band's debut EP Palette on Mammal Sounds Records provides a rich patchwork of mellow tones equipped for days spent luxuriating.

Palette arrives on the heels of the three distinct lead singles that also open the EP. We are first greeted with the lushly introspective "Myself," on which questions of autonomy and boldness are posed – "I've got to be free now / cause I can do this all on my own, do this all by myself." Next up is the buzzy and sensual "Thinkin' Of," which saunters in with all the swagger of a cabaret lounge singer. "SOBER" brings the energy back up, with humbled lyrics tumbling atop a confident beat – "I wanna stay sober, for you." With a tell-tale cassette tape click bringing a warmly retro mood, "Overload" keeps it sexy, and in a crescendo of gentle horns, "Palette" closes out the body of work with the beautiful sentiment – "the music is yours to keep."

daste is comprised of Tyler Harden, Callum MacDonald, and Braxton Tahi. The creation process of Palette was unique in that the band allowed each track to breathe as its own independent moment, and then united them all together to create a cohesive palette of emotions as the finished product. The band remarks, “It became freeing to the group to stop narrowing our sound into one category and try every idea until we were happy. The lyrics followed suit as we drew on themes that highlighted our opinions of the music industry and our own approach. Realising the unique quality of each track, the concept of the EP was born – A palette of tracks, each with its own flavour to create the EP.”
