I've recently become obsessed with the Instagram account @accidentallywesanderson. The vibrant feed consists of scenery shots from around the world that evoke the director's signature sense of whimsy, symmetry, and vintage color palette. Two artists in the electronic realm have also begun to co-opt Anderson's zany yet comforting style – Madnap and Pauline Herr. The producer/songwriter and vocalist (respectively) bring their buzzy single "Slow Down" to life in sepia-toned glory, premiering right here with EARMILK.
Laden with punchy synths and bright melodies, "Slow Down" is a bonafide earworm, and it's visual accompaniment brings the story full circle in a very lighthearted way. The first couple frames immediately transport you to an Andersonian high school football pitch, looming large against a cerulean sky. Our heroes Madnap and Pauline are clad in head-to-toe matching 70's gym class duds (cough, symmetry), teeing off to race… sloths? It's ridiculous and maybe a shade too literal but, who cares? We're invited into a warm fantasy world nestled in the familiar surroundings of adolescent angst, and with the gentle, zippy "Slow Down" as it's soundtrack, it just works.
"'Slow Down' is one of my favorite songs I've ever made, so it only fits that it has become my first ever music video!," shares Madnap. "I don't have a good explanation for why, but my vision for the music video was simply Pauline and I dressed as Michael Cera from Juno racing with slow animals on a track. Sloths ended up being the perfect fit for the 'Slow Down' concept! My friend Brandon (DNZ) did an amazing job directing and editing the music video into something special that really reflected what I was going for." All credit due to Diablo Cody, Juno follows Anderson's lineage, and we all have them both to thank for inspiring this delightful video. “My legs were pretty sore from all of the running the day after we filmed the video, but i’m definitely not complaining," admits Pauline. "We had such a blast creating this and hope you guys love it as much as we do.”
