For anyone wondering about the current state of jazz, you can rest assured knowing that the ever-evolving art form is alive and well. While it has seen its share of ups and downs in the last century, there has been a recent groundswell of young artists bringing new vitality to the music that breaks barriers and will shepherd it into the future. One of those artists is vocalist Anoushka Lucas. Premiering today with EARMILK, the London-based singer songwriter has released a live session video for her single “How’d It Get This Late,” from her forthcoming album due out later this year.
In the same way that the genre of jazz has never had a singular definition, Lucas’ music roams fluently through different stylistic areas with subtlety and taste. The video for “How’d It Get This Late” was shot at Kensaltown Studios and features Lucas with her band mates Martin Terefe on bass, Glen Scott on piano, and Karl Brazil on drums. The instrumentalists provide a warm foundation for Lucas’ velvety vocals as she sings about being ensnared in an unexpected romantic encounter. The track has a smooth feel overall but by its end, it’s crackling with energy from the interplay among the performers. Lucas and her band show off an impressive sound on “How’d It Get This Late” that should make the upcoming album a memorable one.
Anoushka Lucas will be touring the U.K. this spring. Find dates below.
