mxmtoon is an 18 year old Oakland resident and ukukele playing old soul who share's her personal story through rose tinted glasses on new EP 'Plum Blossom' available everywhere digitally but take your first listen today with EARMILK.
'Plum Blossom' is the soft, sweet, and heartfelt EP about life and love that can only be summed up by the clean effervescent scent of the city the day after a downpour, the grainy, damp, yet warm smell of hope as the sun shines over the hills drying up the rain from the day prior.
mxmtoon has amassed a bewildering amount of streams for her singles into the multiple millions all through word of mouth and musical inventiveness.
When asked mxmtoon describes that 'Plum Blossom,'
"was made with the intent of being my musical journal that encompasses the past year and a half for me. the flower symbolically represents growth and resilience, which are both ideas i feel apply to the themes of my songs. i’m ecstatic to release the project as it’s been a long time coming, and even more so for people to be able to listen to it as a whole!"
All seven tracks of 'Plum Blossom' are egregious in their beauty and agonizing in their honesty:
The first four tracks on 'Plum Blossom' build us up with the sweet and more charming side of love with "Cliché" which, encapsulates that feeling when you first see someone and your heart melts; "I Feel like Chet" is the story of a forlorn and fanciful love; "Feelings are Fatal" is that constant sadness of a breakup that you did not intend on; "The Idea of You" is an introspection into the power and deep nostalgia of a one sided love.
The final three tracks on 'Plum Blossom' take us deeper into the tribulations of love beginning with "Porcelain" which, is a delightfully painful exposé of what happens when you take the ultimate risk of being vulnerable enough for love and "Temporary Nothing" further explores the numb felt from a love lost and yet ends, simply put, hopeful.
"I Miss You" is the final track and is the first song to incorporate something other than a ukulele, and foregoes the ukulele entirely as the powerful chords of mxmtoon's synth waft in and out setting the stage for the heavy harmonies of lament. "I Miss You" is the most compelling and impressive track of 'Plum Blossom' and is the perfect conclusion to an album that navigates the innocence and oft times confusing waters of love. If you have ever loved anyone or anything you will feel something when 'Plum Blossom' comes to a close.
Dear mxmtoon, "I don't know if I am in love with you or the idea of loving but you" but it is clear that you are exceedingly talented and your story yearns to be heard. 'Plum Blossom' is the type of album that makes you reflect on the love in your life, an opus for hopeless romantics, told in a manner that for better or for worse having love of any sort is worth it no matter what. A raw, touching, vulnerable, and dynamic performance for someone who is the definition of an old soul.
