Kidsmoke drops kaleidoscopic new single "Rising Sun"

The newest addition to my autumn playlist comes from the peppy new single “Rising Sun” from dream-pop band Kidsmoke. There is something kaleidoscopic about this track. From it’s 1970s’ -esque vocal harmonies to its contemporary- inspired instrumentals, the Welsh band has nailed it.

It’s always a good sign when you can picture a place or a feeling when you listen to a track. “Rising Sun” reminds me of my days of no responsibility. Specifically, when I found myself waking up on a beach in Greece, against my parent’s best interests, with a rising sun on the horizon. I can picture myself dancing on that beach to this track, being more myself than I ever had been before, going my own way. Frontman Lance Williams explains this single as being about fighting against outside pressures pushing you in a direction you're not going, or morphing you into something you're not:

"The first two lines I wrote for “Rising Sun” were “I don’t want to follow” and “I feel your love”. I wanted the song to be centred around those lyrics. So I started thinking how they could be linked somehow. The song ended up being about pushing against what other people expect of you, even if that pressure is coming from the people you are closest to”

Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones and Russ Hayes, “Rising Sun” is the band’s first single off an upcoming album due out in 2019. Having already had past single “Sister Sadness” featured on Netflix’s Black Mirror, Kidsmoke is ready to take the world by storm. “Rising Sun” is available on all digital platforms November 2nd.

Based in Toronto but my mind is always somewhere else. I like coffee, a good banjo solo, and binge-watching British TV shows.
