Early Eyes launched their career back in 2016 on a Minneapolis college campus with a pop-up show "for fun" but unlike some impulsive things people do, they're now one of the buzziest young bands coming out of Minnesota.
Upon taking a quick listen of their songs, it's not hard to pinpoint why the band got popular so quickly; songs like "Take You" and "Coffee" ooze infectiously mellow, playful tones easy to sing along to, with the latter being such a vibe as to amass over 47K views on their DIY music video organically. Since January, Early Eyes has been busy playing gigs all around town and working on their upcoming second EP, which will be released sometime this summer.
Today, EARMILK is excited to premiere Early Eyes' new single and video "Penelope" off this new EP. Sonically, the song is deceivingly warm and vibrant, but as lead vocalist/guitarist Jake Berglove explains, it's "about a myriad of things to us, but mostly it’s about a speaker and their general thoughts about their friend Penelope. The story, although brief, ends with them dying together."
Looking to find a video concept fitting of the conflicting feelings between the instrumental and lyrics, the "Penelope" music video is inspired by 90s TV show Goosebumps, with an Inception-like storyline and contains a variety of "super cheesy, over-the-top horror tropes that reflect the the darker themes in the song while still maintaining a good amount of comedy and fun".
With an effortlessly captivating sound and style, "Penelope" is just the start of an exciting rest of the year for Early Eyes. It's about time this band starts getting some well-deserved exposure outside their home state.
