Without a doubt, one of the best rap crew names belongs to Cunninlynguists. Regardless of how XXL felt back in 2009 (XXL isn't exactly known for having great taste, after all), this lyrical trio has spent well over a decade crushing the rap game. Today, we get big news that they are not only releasing a new album (more on that below) but also have a brand new track in the form of “Violet (The Upper Room).”
Haunting stuff, isn’t it? Over a simple piano beat and a drum kit that will immediately transport you back to the early aughts, Deacon The Villain, Kno and Natti all go in discussing the balance of life. Life and death, fear and faith, right and wrong are all discussed within the track, proving that the trio has not lost their ability to make music that is both dope and thought provoking.
While the verses are fire, the highlight of the track is the chorus. It’s spooky in the best way possible and helps to drive home the ideals questioned in each verse. This is lyricism at its finest, folks. You’d be wise to take notes.
At this point, you can (and should) be wondering where (and when) more of this will be coming to digital shelves worldwide. Luckily, Cunninglynguists blessed us with a release date of their upcoming album, Rose Azura Njano, which is out October 6 via RBC Records.
