The Bloody Beetroots and Jet have teamed up for the most recent addition to the season’s litany of throwback collaborations, and it’s everything you loved about the mid-2000s packed into a track. Titled “My Name Is Thunder,” the new double single dropped via Last Gang Records over the weekend and is the first taste of The Bloody Beetroots’ next album which is due out later this year.
Whenever Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, the Italian producer behind The Bloody Beetroots, graces a dance music festival lineup, there’s almost always a moment during which a few bedazzled techno queens and mythological creature-themed kandi kids suddenly find themselves dancing in a pit that goes from rave to rock show and back again just as quickly. The juxtaposition of hard-hitting electro and straight-up rock is weird in all the right ways, and one of the best things about The Bloody Beetroots. Add Jet — yes, the Australian band behind 2003’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” — to the mix and distill that experience into a track, and you’ve got both versions of “My Name Is Thunder.”
About the surprise return of Jet via an even more surprising collaboration, Rifo explained in a press statement that the Beetroots sought-out the support of the band because the “song needed a certain rock tone… a tone like Nic Cester of Jet had. We thought instead of someone ‘like Nic Cester,’ how about we get the real Nic Cester! Thinking he would be in Australia, it was fate that he lived just a couple hours away from me in Italy. I found him.”
Rifo added: "We worked together, ate together, drank together and created something very powerful together. Around this time the Jet guys started talking and thinking about getting back together, when Nic shared this with his bandmates, the idea came up to have ALL of Jet involved. Because of our different influences, we had different ideas on the mixing and from that we came up with two versions. It's the best of both our worlds!"
