shrimpnose won't be trapped in 'darkness' on new Nazeem and Jaylap collaboration

Intergalactic synths and wobbly bass are more than a means of escape for Minnesota producer shrimpnose. The young creator articulates never before heard sounds like poetry on his newest release, the Not Really EP, which he describes is "like going to the grocery store with four spliffs and a gallon of coffee."

Riley Smithson, aka shrimpnose, infuses his experimental, glitchy sound with catchy bars from fellow Minnesotans Nazeem and Jaylap on the latest addition to said EP, "darkness." Frequent collaborator Jaylap, who contributes the infectious chorus, has recently played shrimpnose-produced tracks while opening for the likes of D.R.A.M., Soulja Boy, and $uicideboy$. Clever lines from Nazeem follow Jaylap's sing-able lyrics, showing numerous angles to shrimpnose's genre-bending production. The spacey sounds on "darkness" is reminiscent of Teebs and FlyLo, but with a mellow vibe that's all its own.

Shrimpnose shares the emotional connection he has with the track,

"'darkness' is a special track to me. I made it during a transformative time in my life. For the first time, I wasn't going to school back to school in the fall. I felt embarrassed for dropping out of college after 3 years of decent grades because my stutter impeded my ability to participate and relate with students. On the other hand, Rootnote Collective had just told me they wanted to release my music, which kind of conflicted with my embarrassment and helped me feel reassured I was doing the right thing pursuing music. One day I locked myself in the studio with Nazeem and Jaylap and we all kind of collaboratively made the song. It was a cathartic process for me because I was transitioning from overwhelming feelings of isolation and depression in college, to a place of acceptance among a group of loved, trusted friends. To me, 'darkness' embodies this sentiment perfectly."
