In a world where R&B acts like The Weeknd and Miguel have not only infiltrated but dominated the Top 40, a new space is opening up for the mainstream success of a subtler, quieter Motown sound. Enter British outfit Two Another. The band's self-titled EP traffics in the kind of infectious hooks that have us collectively falling back in love with genre, minus the disco-ball shimmer.
Two Another is a blessing and a curse. It strings together the band's first few singles – "Higher," "Keep Me Under," and the excellent "Shouldn't Have Done That" – in just the right way, sprinkling each track with the perfect dose of 2016's sugary synth while nudging the laid-back, downtown flow of speakeasy days. Each tune is drizzled in sex appeal, catchy enough for repeat play but sleepy enough for a slow candle burn. Alas, after these three short, blissful tracks, the EP ends. What a heart-breaker, man.
It's no wonder these guys are quickly becoming Hype Machine wunderkinds, hailed as one of 20 artists "about to blow" according to recent social media statistics. Tuning in, one can't help but have a little faith in the everlasting lifespan of classic, jukebox soul, even in a post-ZAYN landscape. We'll certainly be coming back for more.
