It's been quite a thrill for Emoh Instead in the past year and a bit. With Flume announcing his departure from the partnership in early 2015 and the anticipated release of the Gemini EP, Australian producer What So Not has been riding a rocky roller-coaster, but only towards the direction of success. The release of the long-awaited Gemini EP excited the ears of audiophiles, featuring strong collaborations with artists including Dawn Golden, Dillon Francis, George Maple and Tunji Ige. Gemini highlighted a pinnacle point of progression in What So Not as an independent project, constructing a unique sound tactfully individualized by Emoh Instead. The Gemini EP was a stunning myriad of select sounds, blending a warm concoction of jarringly implemented sounds within purposeful use of space.
In the artist's latest, he throws his own spin on a track by fellow Australian act, RÜFÜS DU SOL. What So Not first teased his remix of RÜFÜS DU SOL's "Innerbloom" at Countdown NYE 2016 and it's finally here, officially. The track is given a heavy What So Not rework, complete with monophonic textures and delicate idiosyncrasy that is dampened in poignant melodies. Oriental-inspired string work wafts throughout the track in a jarring yet sincere dissonance. The flip is an idyllic pairing to the depth existing in Tyrone Lindqvist's voice, which tremors through a cacophonous mirage of sonic expression. Check out the track below.
