Many of us listen to music as a means of escape; whether from the dreadful stagnation of a traffic jam, the perils of relationships, or the indescribable stillness following the passing of a loved one. The ability to snatch people up and send them spinning into a foreign orbit, transport them to a weightless domain with no rules or limitations, put their world on pause for even just a moment — this is the mark of a true artist, what hip hop is sorely missing, and precisely what makes KAI OD's TimeLapse album an entertaining and imperative entry into the musical canon. Check out the project, below, and drift as far as you need to:

KAI, a Bay Area native and member of the SpiritWave Movement, produced most of TimeLapse himself, with additional help from Dex Mahkeenuh and Omaru Devoid on "Accept" and "Gravity Trip," respectively. He masterfully combines his talents to create some seriously wavy soundscapes, by way of industrial, intergalactic production and a soothing layer of dampened vocals to help you soar extra high (what's a ceiling?). The beauty of KAI's patented "ocean soul" sound also lies in the fact that he doesn't lead listeners in a particular direction, but rather sets them free — they pick a destination, perceive their own meaning, grasp whatever words or vibrations that resonates with their current situation. That's ocean soul, cousin, and I dig it.

You can purchase TimeLapse on iTunes and embark on your own ocean soul journey for the low-low. Just don't travel too far because KAI OD will be back soon with another banger to keep you properly elevated.
