P. Keys relentlessly raps over protean beat in "Drop Thoughts" [Premiere]

Rap and electronic music both hold dear places in my heart, so when the two worlds collide, I cannot be more overjoyed, and here comes P.Keys. I recently discovered the East Coast rapper when the gawd, Mr. Carmack, reposted his flip of “This Morning Was Funny.” I immediately proceeded to follow him on his socials and check out the rest of his catalogue. What I discovered was a rapper with the uncanny ability to rap over anything—from CRNKN to Kaytranada to Hucci—AND command the attention.

Today, he proves that he is capable of more than flips, releasing an original body of work: his debut EP Nobody, complete with clever artwork (to match his clever lyricism). I am happy to premiere the final track, “Drop Thoughts.” P. Keys exclaims, “Back the fuck up, I need room to breathe,” and goes in on Kief Ledger’s beat, who’s production prowess appears several other times on this project. Besides his ridiculous flow, this track particularly stood out to me, because there are these striking changeups within the song that keeps it so fresh. P. Keys is rapping over this plucky, stuttered beat, and then all of a sudden these conga-like drums in, and, woosh, sparkly chimes hit us.
