Regardless of what you've heard, boom-bap is still going strong in 2014. Sure, it doesn't have widespread appeal as it did back in the day, but ask any head obsessed with those dusty kicks and snares and they'll tell you that there's nothing to worry about. If you need more reassurance that there's love for the sub-genre, peep the latest from DJ JS-1, an artist who always comes through with a hit even before you press play. On "110 Percent," the Queens producer recruits an all-star line up with Breeze Brewin( of Juggaknots fame) Homeboy Sandman, and Kyle Rapps dropping a few rhymes. Each emcee brings the heat and doesn't disappoint over this banging beat: Breeze brings bars for days; Sandman gives us his signature style of verbal gymnastics; and Rapps leaves the track on a high note with a hard hitting flow that'll force you to keep this one on repeat. For more JS-1, check out his most recent project, It Is What It Isn't, which is out now and features appearances from Erick Sermon, KRS One, El da Sensei and Murs, amongst others.
