With Coachella just around the corner, many artists are gearing up to show the U.S., and really the world, what they’ve got. Take Engus and Eleonore Fernese who’s upcoming performance at the festival will be just their third time in the States. This French brother/sister duo began their transformation as instrumentalists. But as Eleonore developed lyrics and Engus began working with electronic sounds on the only household computer, it was clear their styles worked fascinatingly well together, and Carbon Airways was formed. Now, just three short years later, they are ready to bring their unique electronic rock sound to center stage. And in order to create some buzz prior to one of the most famous musical gatherings in the world, they will be releasing their U.S. debut EP Black Sun on March 25.

The seven track EP is brimming with dark, electrified rhythms that would do well in an action packed thriller movie. It’s clear they were going for big sound that would hold up well in front of the thousands of festival goers, especially with the title track “Black Sun”, which is a blend of Eleonore’s deep vocals, slightly reminiscent of Tegan and Sara, and Engus’s urgent spoken lyrics. The danceable beats combat the serious synths, creating a violent energy. This style is continued and built upon throughout the rest of the EP. “DNA Providence” has a heavier, almost dub, accompaniment, with the electric guitar sounding similar to Sleigh Bells’ “Crown on the Ground”. The EP’s third track “Conquest”, has the hard-hitting pattern of the last two but the duo switch it up, stretching out Eleonore’s vocals for a more melodic refrain. The lightest of the original tracks, “Grace and Virtue” breaks from the violence, sounding a bit more gentle.

The EP is rounded out with three different remixes of “Black Sun” by Kill Paris, Betablock3r and Paris Blohm, all ripe for the dancefloor. The EP overall has a surprisingly distinguished sound for such a young pair. It seems Carbon Airways is ready for lift off so take a listen.
