Opening up to the hits behind Toronto's Foundry Series

Back with another impressive lineup of forward-thinking producers, Toronto's month long Foundry festival promises to explore what these ground breaking acts have in store for us in the future. Expect experiments and a chilling atmosphere spread over 3 weekends with certified  legends like Carl Craig, DJ Harvey, and Anthony 'Shake' Shakir headlining alongside soon-to-be's like Four Tet, Cosmin TRG, Efdenim, Skudge, Shed, and Purity Ring.

It kicks off this week at the Tower Automotive, a grim industrial landmark chock-full with artistic potential. Don't expect to see any bottle service cogs turning here, not to mention a lineup of lousy locals — Toronto has been steadily churning out left-field talent with its own share of underground hits. We sat down with the openers on the bill, and asked them about their favourite works curated by the headliners they'll be prepping the Foundry floors for.

Foundry will run March 14th through April 5th. You can grab your tickets and party info here. We're also giving away a pair of weekly passes (good for both shows) every week!

Sarcastic Study Masters Volume 2
DJ Harvey
Sarcastic; 2001

DJ Harvey, Invisible City, with Members Only — March 22nd, 22:00 – 4:00
Sarcastic Master Volume 2 — this mix is perhaps one of the finest ever composed. Done at a time when mixes were still crafted, rather than pumped out of ableton on a whim, it was instantly bootlegged a thousand times over and spread around dance music chat room dungeons. It helped put Harvey back in touch with the world, as this was released still during the time where he could not leave America without risking be banished for ever. It was almost like him saying "Hey, I'm still here, and chances are I'm still the best". It's quintessential Harvey, amazingly programmed and timeless. – Members Only

Efdenim, Cosmin TRG, with Nautiluss and Martin Fazekas — March 21st: 22:00 – 4:00
This song was and still is pretty much the perfect mix of everything I love in a good dance floor jam. Slightly detuned jazzy chords, swingy drums, tiny vocal snippet and all vibes. Still sounds fresh like it was made yesterday. – Nautiluss

carlcraig

Carl Craig with Hali, Jamie Kidd, Mike Gibbs, and Fabio Palermo — April 5th, 22:00 – 4:00
My personal Carl Craig favourite is his 2005 remix of Theo Parrish's "Falling Up". A seminal track of lush synth pads and whirling detuned horns, triply, tracky ,and still eliciting cheers from any discerning late night crowd. The remix perfectly captures the futurism that I feel is an integral part of all of Craig’s best work and perfectly captures the soul of Detroit techno. – Mike Gibbs

Four Tet, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, with Gingy & DJ Colin — March 14, 22:00 – 4:00
It's impossible to summarize Shake's discography in such a short space, but this tune hits a lot of the notes that I love: Detroit melancholia, crunchy jackin drums, a pseudo-transcendental soundscape you can get lost in. This is one of those tunes you'd want to listen to both inside and outside of the club, and I love it for that. – Gingy

Skudge
Skudge Records; 2010
SKUDGE002

Shed, Skudge, Kevin McPhee, David Patterson, and Michael Krochak — April 4th, 22:00 – 4:00
Skudge really opened the doors up for me when it comes to the loopier side of techno. The way they approach both their live show and production has really inspired my own production and appreciation for subtlety. I'm really looking forward to seeing how their music is received by the Foundry crowd who always seem to be eager and open to new experiences. – Kevin McPhee
