There are a few things we love in life. One is great music. Another is being the first to know about it. And today we’re really happy because we get to introduce you all to “Pelican” – the first track from brand new duo Cousin Matt, a group appropriately comprised of cousins Matt and Zach (hailing from Atlanta and New York respectively).
“Pelican” is a funky electro pop jam with elements of retro soul, and at risk of sounding mainstream, is not unlike what Justin Timberlake is laying down. It’s smooth, sexy, fun-in-a-mature-way, with the MVP award undeniably going to Matt's standout, signature silky tenor. The track is grounded in perennial synth but transcends the expected electronic surface with a falsetto overlay, soaring bridge and an old-school approach akin to early LCD Soundsystem.
Maybe it’s the lyrics “I wanna be a pelican / put a whole girl in my mouth / take you far from the fishermen / and parade you way down south” that make us want to go down south (by way of pelican mouth or otherwise) & don a neon tank top, reflective aviators and a foam visor. And even though we're not related to these two talents, we kind of feel like we’re part of this South Beach family reunion because they're making good music, and that my friends, is relatable.
