Indie rap legend Curren$y is gearing up to release his first project in what feels like ages by his standards entitled The Drive-in Theatre, and with the prep of this, his 2014 debut, comes brand new music to tickle the inside of your earholes. If you know anything about Curren$y, you know he has a penchant for satisfying the people, providing high quality, high quantity tunes for free before going on extensive multi-city tours. This current run is sure to follow suit, and the hot spitta gets the ball rolling with the release of his new single "Godfather Four."
The title is extremely apropos given the haunting nature of the elaborate string arrangement courtesy of Nesby Philips, and its melancholy chord progressions are fitting for the New Orleans MC's cinematic visions of grandeur. "Wiping my cars off, putting my jewels on / My pinky ring show and prove who's the new don," he raps nonchalantly in his laid back southern drawl. He enlists the help of Queens lyricist Action Bronson on the tail end, and Bronsolino does not disappoint weaving such wild tales of luxury like, "Rims spin just like spagetti on the pasta fork / Billy Crystal kissed my cheek before the Oscars / He said, 'It was my pleasure' / I said, 'Don't touch my leather' / Then I hopped a flight to Denver." The two operate as a more than functional tag team and the ying and yang style dynamic manages to make for a captivating dichotomy. Hopefully we get more collaborations out of these two in the near future.
If this is what we can expect from Spitta in 2014 then we're on our way to a good year. Stream "Godfather Four" below via DJ Whoo Kid, and be on the lookout for Curren$y's The Drive-In Theatre due out soonish.
