The Astronomical Kid, better known as Astro, is breaking out with his first mixtape, Deadbeats & Lazy Lyrics, hosted by DJ Tech. The 16 year-old Brooklyn MC came into the limelight as a finalist on the first season of “X Factor,” which prompted a deal with Epic Records under his mentor, L.A. Reid. The mixtape features productions by 9th Wonder, BrandUn DeShay, ThatLoserLaron, and MF Doom, as well as three tracks by Astro himself.
His sound is reminiscent of retro East Coast rap, but his age shows through his lyricism with some surface level self-exploration and basic bragging, at one point boasting he’s got so much game he’ll look you in the eyes when exchanging contact info. Though he may need to mature a bit before he fully blows up, there is sure potential here and an undeniable flow that makes it worth a listen and a good warm up before he releases an official label backed album.
