Meet independent indie-pop artist Matteson Gregory, whose new '90s-inspired pop-rock EP You Can Call Me Mattie: Season One is built around the concept of Season One, the formative chapter of early adulthood defined by reinvention, resilience, and self-discovery.
Opening the four-track project is "Drive," a cinematic introduction that pairs Gregory's evocative vocal delivery with understated, driving acoustic textures. Its restrained yet dramatic arrangement invites listeners to lean in, drawing greater focus to the vulnerability and emotional weight of her lyrics.
"Drive" makes for a compelling opener, setting the tone for the EP from its very first moments.
Gregory's vivid, freeze-frame lyricism places listeners directly inside the experience, capturing the exhilaration of falling in love, the feeling of a serendipitous connection, and the dizzying rush of embracing something entirely new.
On what she hopes listeners take away from the project as a whole, Gregory says: “I hope people will take away that they aren’t behind, they’re just in season one. That it’s okay to not have everything figured out. It’s okay to fail. It’s okay to fall in love. It’s okay to start over. I want people to embrace the messy parts of life. Because I think those are often things we try to cover up. Especially in a society where everything needs to look ‘perfect.” I want to inspire people to not be afraid to live the life they truly want.”
From Gregory's thoughtful lyricism to the polished, commercial pop sensibility woven throughout the EP, it's clear she has a distinct vision for how she wants her music to resonate.
“Drive” acts as a confident introduction that balances emotional honesty with accessible songwriting, marking Gregory as an artist with both a strong creative identity and plenty of room to grow.
