A Waltz In The Woods is the debut album from Utah pianist and composer Reese Harper, and it's an easy record to get lost in. Written during a difficult period in his life, the album grew out of solo piano sessions in a mountain cabin, where Harper began recording improvised pieces as a way of processing everything around him.
The result is a collection of instrumental tracks that feel personal without needing a lot of explanation. Piano sits at the heart of the record, joined by subtle ambient textures that add depth without pulling focus. Harper keeps the arrangements clean and lets the melodies carry the weight.
What makes the album work is its sense of balance. Some pieces feel reflective, while others bring a little more warmth and optimism, giving the record a natural flow from start to finish. Tracks such as "Thaw," "Hope," and "Cottonwood" stand out, but the album is best experienced as a complete listen.
Harper spent much of his adult life focused on building a software company, making this release a return to a lifelong connection with music. That history adds context, but the music speaks for itself. The performances are thoughtful, expressive, and engaging.
For a debut, A Waltz In The Woods makes a strong impression. It's a beautifully played collection that draws you in from the first track and gives you plenty of reasons to stay until the last.
