Virginia-based indie-pop artist Aidan Leclaire has released his new single, “Lucy.”
A track that’s absolutely full of the carefree energy of a summer evening, “Lucy” explores the difficulties of modern relationships and their opportunity for self-discovery, all filtered through an indie pop-rock lens.
“Lucy” was written collaboratively between Aidan Leclaire and bandmate Izzy Vega, who also plays guitar, bass, and drums on the track, and is also a teaser for Aidan Leclaire’s upcoming album due to be released later this year.
The track is very much a fresh indie-pop sound with grittier alt-rock elements laced through, layering a pop-earworm refrain of “uh!” and jangly guitar work with decently heavy-hitting drums and a surprisingly driving bassline.
The production is proof of the track’s emotional centre; things can be fun and easy only to a certain point, especially if there’s tension lying under the surface. Aidan Leclaire’s repeated line of:‘"I just like the rush/I just like the rush/I just like the rush" shows this off very neatly and succinctly.
“The song is about today’s dating environment and the challenge of balancing a relationship while trying to establish a place for myself in the world, while also going through a self-discovery process,” says Aidan Leclaire. “It’s not necessarily a new struggle, but I think this generation is more conscious of that interplay and more expressive about it.”
If “Lucy” is anything to go on, Aidan Leclaire’s upcoming album will definitely be one to watch out for.
