A collaboration with former tourmates Current Joys, “Red Siren Pick Up” is Magdalene’s most visceral track to date. A combination of sonically abrasive pop music with melancholic indie rock, “Red Siren Pick Up” is Magdalene’s open letter about her personal history dealing with grief and the heady romance of destructive situations.
“‘Red Siren Pick Up’ is about worshiping chaos and running towards it to feel alive,” says Magdalene. “The music video follows a runaway bride in psychosis who falls in love with a rock star on television. News breaks that he’s tragically killed in a car accident by an old white truck. Magdalene becomes fixated and falls in love with the truck that killed him.”
You’d be forgiven for not realising how dark in tone “Red Siren Pick Up” actually is on first listen, but the discordant nature of the melody fits well with the themes of grief and the slightly uncomfortable oddness of the lyrics and the music video’s aesthetics. This is where the mash-up of pop and dark indie rock really comes into play, and the result is a catchy track that shows off exactly how well Magdalene and Current Joys are able to work together.
Co-produced and written by Slushpuppy (KATSEYE, Cortis) and Dylan Harrison (ADELA), “Red Siren Pick Up” is the obvious next step in Magdalene’s set of recent releases, which includes “P*rn In The USA” and “DJesus,” as part of her journey to becoming the next big alt-pop darling.
With her debut album set for release later this year, the hype and mythos surrounding Magdalene has every chance to kick up several notches.
