Singer-songwriter Alaina May makes her return to music with the indie pop single, "Casual." After years of perfecting her craft and studying the melodic tones of her voice, May is ready to showcase all her hard work on her first single since 2023. Produced in part with indie rock duo TOLEDO, the single is a refreshing start for Alaina May as she looks to step back into the spotlight. With "Casual," May does just that.
"Casual" is atmospheric in its approach and doesn't try to downplay the emotions held within the track. Within her personal collection of handwritten songs, May is very focused on the very essence of every note. Nothing is out of place or for fluff. Deep and introspective as a songwriter, May reflects her life in the bedrock of her music.
The inspiration for "Casual" is a longing and the dreaded longing for connection with each other. It's one that May tries to get on the record.
“‘Casual’ lives in that space where you mistake limerence for real connection,” May shares. “After something ends, even the smallest moments of closeness feel heightened and intoxicating because they’re fill a vulnerable void. You can be completely self-aware—naming the pattern, recognizing the push and pull—and still not be able to stop yourself from getting pulled in. It’s that tension between wanting something light and realizing that, at my core, I’m just not wired for ‘casual.’”
With her sights laser-focused on perfecting her music and imagery, "Casual" is a first in a long line of work for Alaina May.
