Glasgow-born, London-based songwriter Crawford Mack returns with his latest single, "Don't Play The Victim," a follow-up from the equally powerful single "Back From The Brink" Mack has a unique ability to move between the personal and the political, delivering a track that is both playful and precise in its methodical aim at fragile masculinity.

The song's core narrative is a powerful takedown of the classic 'femme fatale' trope. Mack dissects this tired narrative, calling it a flattering fantasy for an arrogant man. By framing the strong woman as a villain, the trope provides a supernatural excuse for the man’s downfall, ignoring his own failings. As Mack explains, the song directly challenges the male arrogance that requires a woman to have "cheated" for him to lose. The artist explains in detail that “This one started as a reckoning with the femme fatale trope; specifically the way it frames a powerful woman as the villain of an arrogant man's story while quietly flattering the man even in his defeat. The trope only works if you accept its central premise: that a woman's power is essentially decorative, and that a man's downfall therefore requires some kind of supernatural explanation.”

Mack executes this thematic dismantling by following a cast of self-convinced male characters—Tom, Billy, Dan, and Luke—who all reveal the same predictable patterns. Whether they receive hard truths or have their egos stroked until they’re broke, they are ultimately left bewildered when she turns their own language back on them. There's a lovely juxtaposition in the song in that, there's an undeniable tense lyrical theme to the project, but this is opposed by the upbeat, joyful feeling of the production.
