Reaching thirty years as an independent band is no small feat, and Funkopia finds Redtenbacher’s Funkestra sounding relaxed, confident, and very much in their element. Led by bassist and composer Stefan Redtenbacher, the album is less about just making a big statement and more about showing what long-term collaboration can produce when the focus stays firmly on the music.
The lead track, “Code 12,” is a strong entry point. Recorded live, it leans into a smoky jazz-funk feel, driven by tight rhythm and subtle interplay rather than big hooks. Guitarists Tony Rémy and Mike Outram trade lines with an easy chemistry that feels natural and unforced. It is easy to hear why the track has become one of the most popular on the album.
Across Funkopia, the band avoids falling back on standard jazz-funk formulas. The arrangements feel thoughtful but never stiff, and the ensemble playing is clearly the result of years of shared sessions. The horn parts, handled by Horn House, add punch and personality while staying locked into the groove.
Recorded in the UK, the album sounds warm and cohesive. Funkopia does not chase trends or nostalgia but instead offers something uplifting and solid, proving that consistency, craft, and community still matter. For fans of jazz-funk with depth and feel, this project is well worth the time.
