Toronto electronic hardware duo World News pulls us into their genre-defying sonic style on “JELLYFISH,” the final track from their debut album ON STEROIDS.
Rooted in a dark yet hypnotic electronic-tinged soundscape, the evocative genre-less offering weaves glitchy tones with slow instrumentals and ethereal backing vocals for a track that feels satisfying and uneasy all at once. The foreboding yet trance-inducing musicality is elevated by the vivid visuals. The music video filmed at a waterpark in Ontario, Canada is vibrant and cinematic in stunning contrast to the haunting sonic echoes.
Capturing the tension between two lovers who have been through the ups and downs of life together and how they use their friction to become better versions of themselves, the track is a deeply introspective yet rhythmically catchy production.
The lyrics of the track draws from a disturbing childhood anecdote to deliver an overarching message that tries to make sense of humanity. Speaking of the track, Bill Cutbill of the duo says, “When I was a young kid, there was a swimming pool half an hour's drive away from my house that had a water slide. Once when I went, it was all closed up, and the rumour going around was that someone had gone down and wedged razorblades into the grooves of the slide to cut kids as they went down. I have no idea whether that was true or not, but the image was so disturbing it never really left me. How could someone take something as joyous and pleasurable as a waterslide, and do something so dark? What on earth is wrong with people?"
JELLYFISH is one stark example of the themes of contrast and conflict that stretch through the album, which spans rich and emotive numbers that intertwine experimental musicality and thoughtful reflections. Adventurous, explorative and underpinned by a search for connection World News offers up refreshing sonic experience to dive into.
