Lord Huron teams up with Kristen Stewart for single "Who Laughs Last"

Indie-folk rock band Lord Huron has returned with their first new song in two years, “Who Laughs Last.” The track is a collaboration with actress Kristen Stewart, who also stars in the accompanying music video released alongside the song.

Both the single and video were released just a day after the band's announcement of tour dates for the upcoming summer and fall.

On “Who Laughs Last,” the band provides their signature melancholic lyricism. The chorus illustrates a false sense of confidence, as Ben Schneider sings about a desire to get away from his current situation.

Schneider’s vocals fall in between Stewart’s first-person narration of the events that led to this epiphany, which also perfectly encapsulates the feeling of having your mind run wild while on the open road.

By the final chorus, the lyrics and Schneider's performance take on a more wistful and ambiguous tone, contrasting greatly with the instrumentation, which remains upbeat.

A memorable guitar line chugs along, occasionally changing to accent the trail of thought. Schneider and Tom Renaud’s guitar playing is accompanied by Mark Barry’s danceable drum pattern and Miguel Briseño’s pummeling bass.

Overall, listeners familiar only with Lord Huron’s biggest hits may be caught off guard by the energetic nature of "Who Laughs Last," but it is a welcome addition to the band’s catalog. Hopefully, more new material will surface soon, but in the meantime, the band's open road looks promising.
