Shape of Water reimagines "Blinding Lights" with their signature edge

Shape of Water blaze fiercely back into comfortable territory with their cover of The Weeknd’s massive single “Blinding Lights.” This is an overhaul, recharging a modern classic even as it retains the band’s signature.

As soon as the track drops, it showcases more cinematic sound. Where The Weeknd’s original revels in neon-soaked nostalgia and shimmering synths, Shape of Water’s version adds a gloomy edge. Layered instrumentation and a haunting vocal delivery do away with the original’s glossy brightness, providing a fresh, fresh, dynamic contrast.

This song is a cover for Shape of Water, indicating their ripening sound. “Our cover of Blinding Lights is our salute to an incredibly modern ancatchy-soundingng song. We thought it connected perfectly with the vibe of the new music we’re working on, so it felt like the natural song to reimagine from the perspective of Shape of Water,” the band shares.

This cover is midway between homage and innovation, proving that Shape of Water could pay tribute to a global hit while producing something distinctly theirs. The energy shifts and morphs throughout the track as the arrangements become elaborate, showing the group’s ability to marry progressive components with singable melodies.

With Blinding Lights, Shape of Water shows how complete their mastery of the reinvention of the form can be, not only taking something already so iconic and turning it into something audacious and fresh. Whether you’re a fan of The Weeknd, a fan of Shape of Water, or flunking some generational cross-examination for listening to things that aren’t cool to like, this cover is worth a listen to a rebirth that reminds you the band is here to raise the standards for what to mimic.
