BATTLEFLAGG has just shared a mesmerizing and enticing new four-track EP. Called Solastalgia, the singer-songwriter collaborated with famed producer Daniel Knowles who has worked with the likes of Sharon Van Etten and Cigarettes After Sex among others for his New Year's musical offering. The EP is the first music from Philadelphia-based BATTLEFLAGG since his 2022 release of The Blood Meridians.
With Solastalgia, BATTLEFLAGG has created a musical collection detailing the themes of missed connections, feeling homesickness even when one is at home, loneliness and environmental changes that happen in distressing ways. Leading single "Ghosts" is an all encompassing indie rock masterpiece complete with cinematic drenched electrifying guitars, melodic hooks and sparkly synths. The song is a highlight off of the EP and plays into the central theme of a person who must leave their home due to environmental disasters caused by global warming. Lyrics include, "Out on the open road again / where the wind blows in my eyes / dust on my mind / I was a rain child / grew up on the Cherokee Hill / We were wild and felt so much alive / There's not a way back / everyone's a stranger," show this narrative. Then there is "I Gotta Love", a soaring alternative rock gem featuring an anthemic chorus, bouncy bass and stirring drums. The track discusses the desire to make someone happy and the desire to love. The track is expansive and hard hitting, taking the listener to a new musical world. BATTLEFLAGG takes a reflective moment with the track "Solastalgia". The song is an acoustic folk rock track featuring sweeping guitars and warm gentle vocals. He sings, "New York is a job / Since when did we / Go to war / Funny that I can't recall / Is it raining on you? / It's raining on me," sharing a poignant narrative of sadness and hardship.
