UK indie artist Alexandra Leaving has followed up her debut EP An Exorcise In Anger with the release of a powerfully anthemic indie-rock track, titled "Out Of This World".
"Out Of This World" hits you with raw, feedback-soaked guitar from the first second, with pacey drums driving the song through quickly. Alex's vocals come in softly at first, a clever contrast, dropping to a whisper after the first soft verse.
"I think you're out of this …" she slowly pronounces, before completing the sentence with that powerful, soaring, elongated vocal: "world!"
It's here in the chorus that Alex reveals the depth, power and versatility of her voice, as the band steps up and the song takes on a satisfyingly broad feel. The use of wailing lead guitar and rich drums, with few spaces left unfilled, adds to a sense of intensity. Later, the bass breakdown is infectious and intoxicating, guaranteed to burrow itself into your brain.
This is a song about obsession, intoxication and surrendering to the feeling, and Alex paints that picture skilfully through both sound and lyrics, creating a soundscape which sounds epic beyond the three-and-a-half minute play-time.
Alex is originally from rural Shropshire, UK, and has now carved out a place for herself on the London scene. Despite only starting to share her music with the world last year, she has already gathered support with high-profile radio airtime and online playlisting. "Out Of This World" sees Alex take another confident step forward, and promises very exciting times to come for this proudly independent female artist.
