Certainly one of the most creative, outside-the-box electronic albums we've experienced this year – megacity1000 by Australian producer 1tbsp is an album that transcends the typical approach. Based around themes of world-building, metropolitan lifestyle and the ever-expanding city megastructures we live in, it's an album that has a narrative throughout the piece. The Australian artist explains that “Megacity1000’ is a concept dance album that I put together over the last year. I’ve been really fascinated and intimidated by the problems that my generation are starting to face around expanding population growth, climate change & gentrification.
The promotion of the album (ironically pro-capitalistic) follows the arc of building the city, trying to bring on investors & entice people to move, and then ultimately the city failing. My girlfriend and I spent two months over summer building a cardboard city from scratch and we shot the visuals for the album in this miniature city. We were heavily influenced by Playtime by Jacques Tati (1967) and Metropolis by Fritz Lang (1928), as well as following along with what’s happening with The Line getting built in Saudi Arabia."
Beyond the story of the album lies a sound that's completely unique in it's approach. Formed of complex rhythmic structrues and influences that clearly range from tribal house, to UK Garage, Hip Hop and further afield – the album is abundetly artistic and esoteric in equal measure. There's tracks that lean on a more formulaic approach to 4X4 house music, with others that completely challenge our idea of modern electronic music.
