Philadelphia-based experimental folk artist Theo R is onto something special with his newly released single “Get Up!” Following his recent album, I Didn’t Imagine This!, “Get Up!” marks a new venture for Theo, showcasing his evolving sound.
The track runs just under two minutes, but shows promise with its blend of hypnotic guitar and smooth vocals, creating a melancholic and soothing atmosphere.
In making “Get Up!”, Theo R shares, “I really wanted to capture the excitement and innocence of having a crush. As a massive perfectionist, this song was really important for me. I forced myself to finish the song within about a week of starting it, embracing its simplicity and imperfections, which I would normally see as flaws. This played a huge role in what I was hoping to accomplish with the song, as having a crush is an often chaotic and messy experience. This is the first single from my upcoming album, and I found it crucial for the song to display a ton of energy and personality while also evoking significant emotion.”
Melodically, the track remains suspended throughout, never quite touching the ground. The staccato-like quality of the lyrics amplifies the jumble of emotions tied to the anxiety of a new crush, while also balancing nicely with the guitar, which takes center stage.
One thing is clear: “Get Up!” shows Theo R’s distinct vision—a sound unbound by traditional song structures or genre expectations. It creates a space where folk and experimental elements can seamlessly coexist.
