Four-time Grammy-nominated alternative R&B and Hip Hop artist 6lack keeps changing the course and pushing the musical scope on every release, as shown on his new single "F**k The Rap Game." The irreverent title might throw some people off, but I can understand why after a closer listen. While many of his core fans might want the same thing from him, 6lack is fully aware of his creativity and is committed to doing things from the heart as opposed to being forced by the public.
The record itself is a juxtaposition of sorts as audiences get a blend of genres in terms of sound and themes, pronounced by the concept of duality. 6lack takes us on a journey of self-awareness, the pressures of being a young black man in an industry that keeps taking, and the effort it takes to keep his sanity. Here, he sounds sombre, impassioned, and vulnerable and in all sincerity, he gives the game the proverbial middle finger.
“FTRG” follows the release of his beloved More Lonely Nights acoustic project that celebrated the one year anniversary of his Grammy-nominated album, Since I Have A Lover. It also arrives as 6LACK is in the middle of his striking No More Lonely Nights Tour that has introduced a series of intimate performances that capture the raw emotion that lines the collection of songs on Since I Have A Lover, delving into 6LACK’s personal journey with mental health, healing, personal growth, love and finding his way through it all — the good and the bad.
